What Kind of Bedding to Use
Cedar shavings should be avoided entirely! Cedar has been linked to respiratory infections in small animals. Some animals are even allergic to it, developing hair loss and rashes from contact with the oils found in the wood. Pine is also believed to cause health problems in small animals. These two soft woods contain Phenol, which is in the oil that gives them their aromatic smell, small animals often have severe reactions to these woods because of these oils. If you have no choice but to use cedar or pine, pine is definatly the better choice. Aspen is another wood shaving used as animal bedding, but is completly safe because it contains no Phenol. Aspen is alot more expensive than cedar and pine, and also is harder to find. It's odor controlling properties aren't very good, so it's not always cost efficient to use because the bedding needs to be changed often to control odors. CareFresh is a wonderful small animal bedding. It is made from wood pulp fibers that are too short to be made in to paper. The fibers are processed to form what looks like shredded egg cartons. CareFresh can be costly, but it's superior odor control make it worth the extra money! Timothy hay is though by some to be the best bedding to use because it's a important food source for pigs, plus they like to play in it. It smells nice and is relatively cheap to buy by the bale from your local feed store or farm.

Providing Entertainment
Guinea pigs love to play with toys. Good toys for guinea pigs are the kind made for large parrots. Just make sure they are well constructed and can't come apart with regular use. You can also give them plastics balls made for cats that have a bell in them, just make sure they aren't going to come apart, the small peices could end up being a hazard to your pigs. You don't have to spend a bunch of money to keep your pigs entertained, some of the best toys are found around the house! TP and paper towel tubes stuffed with hay make excellant boredom busters. Oatmeal containers can become a hidey hole or cut off the bottom and its a tunnel! Miscellaneous cardboard boxes can be used as hideouts. Paper grocery bags cut down to piggie size can become a cavy cave! Or fill that same grocery bag with hay and it's a treat and toy in one! Hand me down stuffed animals can be used by your pigs as a snuggly friend. If your piggie starts to pull the stuffing out you can just remove it and fill the toy with bedding and sew him back up! Use your imagination, just make sure not to use anything that might be harmful to your fuzzy friend! |

Grooming Your Cavy
Unless you have a long haired guinea pig, there won't be much you need to do in the way of grooming. Guinea pigs really enjoy being brushed. Use a soft bristled baby brush and he'll lay in your lap for hours! Sometimes it's necessary to bathe your pig. Long haired breeds are harder to maintain and require a bath on occasion. Guinea pigs have very sensitive skin so you really have to be choosy when finding a shampoo to use. The best kind is that made for kittens. It's extremely mild. Avoid baby shampoos, even though they say they are mild on the bottle, they can be terribly harsh to a guinea pigs skin! When bathing your pig use the bathroom or kitchen sink and use a cup to thoroughly wet his fur with warm water. Avoid wetting his face and be careful not to get water in his ears! Lather his fur with the shampoo, again avoiding eyes and ears. Rinse the soap really well from his fur, leaving any residue behind can be very irritating. You can wash his face with a damp washcloth, don't use any soap. Towel him dry and then use a blowdryer on a low setting to thoroughly dry him. You can clean any waxy buildup from his ears with a Q-Tip, but do not insert it into his ear canal! You will need to clip your piggies nails on occasion. The best time to do this is after a bath when the nails are soft. Use a pair of clippers made for babies, they are small and easy to handle. If your pig has transparent nails this is easy, just clip enough off to avoid the vein that can be seen in the nail. If your pigs nails are black you will have to guesstimate, just cut the sharp tips off and you won't cut the vein. |

What if Your Pig is Ill?
If you suspect you guinea pig is sick, consult a veterinarian that deals with small animals. Believe me when I say that they are few are far between! The money is in cats and dogs, not small animals, so most vets won't even bother. If you are lucky enough to find a vet with some small animal knowledge always consult with him before administering your own first aid. Guinea pigs are delicate creatures and require specific care. Medications and products made for other small animals can be deadly if administered to guinea pigs. |
